Italian Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Description

Italian stuffed cabbage rolls, also known as involtini di cavolo, combine seasoned ground meats, rice, and herbs wrapped in tender cabbage leaves, simmered in a rich tomato sauce for a comforting and flavorful dish.


Ingredients

  • 1 large head of savoy cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup cooked short-grain rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Remove outer leaves of cabbage and blanch them in boiling water for 2-3 minutes until pliable. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a pan, heat olive oil and sauté onions and garlic until fragrant.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, cooked rice, sautéed onions, garlic, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.
  4. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each cabbage leaf, fold the sides in, and roll tightly.
  5. Pour a layer of tomato sauce into a baking dish, then arrange the cabbage rolls seam-side down.
  6. Cover with remaining tomato sauce and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes until the rolls are tender and the sauce is bubbling.

Notes

For a vegetarian twist, replace the meat with lentils or mushrooms. Serve with polenta or crusty bread for a complete meal.
